Saint Elizabeths Hospital was established in 1855 to serve individuals with mental illnesses. As the State psychiatric hospital of the District of Columbia, we are also a teaching hospital, offering training for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and chaplains.
Saint E's and the Community
Saint Elizabeths Hospital provides residential treatment to more than 280 women and men with serious and persistent mental illnesses.
We invite the community to join us as volunteers and also as guests at community events.
Community volunteers offer an extra dimension of care, enrichment, and service to individuals in care.
Depending on their abilities and interests, volunteers may teach computer classes, tutor individuals in math or reading, participate in the photography or writing programs, or lead arts workshops.
